Queen of things

blue 002 blue 006 blue 008 blue 005
Here we are with the first version of my updated hair, I now have super-short bangs. This was intentional, mostly because I grew tired of searching frantically for the hair-scissors every single time my bangs start to block my vision. I also went through two rounds of bleaching to update the color, which you will hopefully see in the next post. I love cutting my own hair for two reasons: I let my ego become ginormous when it comes out looking bad-ass, and also because if it looks like shit I can’t get mad that I spent a lot of money on it. Win-Win.

As I am the queen of DIY hair, whether awesome or mediocre, I am also the queen of many things. Shoes for instance, as soon as I get the perfect collection of flats, boots, heels, and mocs, I then become the queen of destroying them. There are not many detail shots of my shoes after I own them for a month, because I am so rough on them and they look like garbage. These woven flats for instance, are no longer woven as much as held together by bits of fabric. I am also the queen of accumulating awesome dresses, and then forgetting that I own them, ahem. Add to this list: Queen of tired-face, inhaling coffee, losing only important items, taking on too many projects, finding new TV shows to obsess over, hating Nickelback, loving Weezer, and breaking my car. Yes, I know, I RULE. Did you see what I did there? ;)

Eats: Green Smoothie

Look at that hipster mug!  A few of you have asked about the green smoothie I posted on Instagram a little while back or, as I like to call it “Hulk Food”. I don’t really have an exact recipe for this concoction, this just falls into the “wing-it” category, but I figured what the hell, here goes:

What I typically do, is make sure I have the essentials: Kale, almond milk, ice, and fruit. From there you can add whatever you fancy, but to start, make sure you have a lot of kale. We grew a shitload of it in the garden this summer, so after I rinsed it I tore it into smaller pieces and packed it into the blender, usually a third of the blender is filled with kale. I have no idea how many cups that is, but I would say 2-2 ½ firmly packed. Next, I usually add half of a chopped orange, and a handful of blueberries. We grew a lot of mint & orange mint this year, so I have been adding mint leaves and I find this to be delicious, so you always have that option. Next, add almond milk (I use vanilla flavored), again, I have no idea how much to use, I probably use about half a cup. Then, add some ice to make it cold and blend. If it is too thick, you can add more almond milk, or even a little water. I also usually make WAY too much and leaving some in the fridge for the next day-which is okay, but it tastes better fresh.

I know that is the worst recipe ever for anything because I never measure anything and add random things as I go, so I have a few links to recipes online. You know, ones with exact measurements and people who know what they are doing.

I have been drinking these every morning and they are pretty filling, but I would also recommend eating a banana or something a few hours later so you are not starving like me. Cool Beans?

Some plans & whatnot

Yay, more engagement photos! There are so many awesome ones you guys, I am having a hard time trying to pick a few to print and frame. Oh and Michelle and Chris included a few of Louie and of our kitchen (while they were waiting for our slow asses to hurry up) so yeah, Louie bonus!

I have been asked several times what our plans are after the wedding, and for once it is nice to be able to think about it. Since about 2009, I have been working full-time, and have been going to school full-time. I graduated at the end of 2011 with my bachelors in English, and have been doing nothing but wedding planning and catching up with friends and family since then. Now that the wedding is a mere two months away, I am starting to really piece together a few plans.

As far as work goes, I would like to do something different, if not find a job that pertains to my degree/interests a little more. I did apply for an assistant position in the AP department a month ago, and my work is very slow at filling positions… however, about ten other people applied for the same position so I am not holding my breath. I would honestly love to get a job at Oakland University where I graduated from, maybe just a clerical position like I have now. Basically, I am going to be keeping an eye out.

I also want to write. I have been keeping a notebook with me to write down all of my ideas and I have so many! I want to be a writer more than anything, just to have something I honestly love and worked hard on be published, even if I have to do it myself, is my ultimate goal. Kyle even offered for me to go down to part-time to work on writing more (if I stay with my current job). It is not something we can entirely afford to do right now, but it is nice to know that could be an option.

Kyle and I also have about a million house projects that we really want to get started on. I think the goal is going to be to tackle one room at a time, which is fine because Kyle will be going back to school in the fall and I will be left to do a lot of damage on my own, muwahahaha! My priority will be to focus on writing, but I do plan on getting the house to look and feel more “us”. That and we are tired of looking at brown walls (Seriously, who paints walls the color of poop?).

As for the honeymoon? We are going to take a week off after the wedding to rest but like I said, Kyle will be in school so we are going to plan a trip for next spring. We still have not picked a destination, but we will start planning that after the fall semester.

Babies? Yeah don’t plan on seeing any for a while. I am still not even sure if I want to have kids, I have always wanted to adopt if I were going to have a kid, but that is an entire other post that I will have to get to. We have too many things that we want/need to do with our lives and taking care of three pets is a lot of work, let alone a human being.

So yep, there you are, caught up with our “Life after Marriage” plans. I am pretty excited to share them all with you as they come along.

Brown & Blue all over

bluebrown 002 bluebrown 006 bluebrown 005

I would apologize for the giant bags under my eyes in these photos, but they seem to just be a common occurrence lately. Actually, I am pretty sure I have had bags under my eyes since as long as I can remember, but getting more than 6 hours of sleep a night might be more flattering to my face. Poor face.

One of the reasons I did not get enough sleep is on account of staying out to see “Moonrise Kingdom” last night, followed by some pints & chips at the new “Red-Fox pub” in Royal Oak. I am always one for movies, but I have to say that I have been really impressed with the summer movies this year. Between “The Amazing Spider-man”, “Brave”, “Moonrise Kingdom”, “Ted” and even earlier this year “The Hunger Games”, “21 Jumpstreet” and “The five-year engagement”. Of course, my favorite this year has been “The Avengers Assemble”, and sadly I missed out on “Snow White and the Huntsman”, but we still have “The Dark Knight Rises” on our agenda too. Kyle and I have always been movie-geeks, our first-date was a movie and anytime we get a free evening, we are out to see one. I think we single-handedly kept the video rental store in Royal Oak going an extra month on account of all of the movies we rented. Now I have to wait until 2015 for the next Avengers movie?? WAH!! That is what happens when you enjoy the little things in life like great movies with sexy-heroes and hilarious banter, you gotta wait for what feels like a million years for the next one. -___-

Faces

bodiah 001 bodiah 002 bodiah 003 bodiah 004
My camera has been on the fritz ever since I took pictures with Tom Hiddleston a few weeks back, he must have been too adorable for my camera ;) Most photographers would shrug off auto-focus, because only amatures use that feature, however, when outfit photos can only be taken in the few minutes between rushing out the door and the next destination, having the auto-focus work on my camera is a welcomed option. As you can see here, we made up for that by making crazy faces in the 100 degree weather. It is probably a good thing that these photos are a little unfocused as I am not wearing any makeup and was coated in a sheet of sweat, yummy!

Speaking of summer, all I want to do lately is read. I finally created an account with Goodreads and it is awesome to see all of the books I have read this year all lined up all pretty together. It is also cool to see what my friends are reading and recommending. I sometimes think I would love a job in publishing, or as a book critic, but I don’t think I could just read new books all of the time. There are too many classics that I want to get through and I am trying my best to pepper my reading list with said classics, you know, in between those 900 page George RR Martin books that I can’t put down...He is a life-ruiner folks. So on that note, what is everyone reading this summer?

Little Bits: Weddings & Weeds

Wedding projects, & gardens, & cats-oh my! Want to know the secret to growing an amazing vegetable/herb garden? Plant items, water-log them by forgetting to turn off the sprinkler, and pulling weeds? Pssh! Over-rated. Seriously though, Kyle and I have been so busy with life that we have been the worst gardeners ever. We have Jurassic Park sized weeds growing on the outside of our fence, and I am pretty sure that the neighbors think we are some sort-of white-trash hippies. Never fear, cleaning up the yard, again, is on the list for this weekend, so hopefully we can regain our image of the awesome young couple who just happen to grow corn in their yard. Yes, we’ve got summer squash, beans, peas, tomatoes, dill, basil, kale, mint, orange mint, medium-hot peppers, and corn is on it’s way. We only killed a few of the flowers, including my pretty sunflowers, but all the shade plants are still alive and well. We even have some grass on our lawn, which is more than what most people in the Midwest have at the moment.

Anyway, here are some Instagram pics to show you a little bit of my life this past week.

1)Wedding shower invites, handwritten & stamped, with owls. 2) Barry-kittens, being adorable. 3)Our engagement photos, all pretty and on a disk for us 4)Mojito's made with the mint we grew in our yard. 5)HULK FOOD-Green smoothie, made with kale & orange mint we grew, yum.

Worse for wear

fireworks 105 fireworks 104 fireworks 107 fireworks 109

This my friends, is apparently a really cool outfit. Pretty simple by my own personal standards, but a girl took a picture of me in the bathroom while I was out the other weekend wearing it because she liked it so much. Fashion blogger points FTW!

I am practically in shock that it is half-way through July already, JULY! WHERE THE HELL HAS THE TIME GONE? 2 and a half months from now, I will be walking down the isle, hopefully not tripping over myself, and starting a new chapter in the life and times of Kyle & Sara. Guys, it is now crunch time! I tried my best attempt to see everyone this weekend and to have some fun, I am completely exhausted, but it was nice to get that last hoorah out before I become a hermit for the next few weeks. It’s all ass-kicking at the gym, becoming a DIY extraordinaire, and trying not to pull my hairs out from this point forward. Kyle’s brother & sister-in-law also kindly gave us a window air conditioning unit so now I don’t have to sweat balls while doing all of this. I can’t even begin to mention how amazing all of my friends and family are for all of their help with the wedding and house-stuff the past year. I am going to be forever in their debt.

Okay, so onto kicking the rest of this summer’s ass and telling fall to bring it. BOOYAH!

BECAUSE I CAN

boots 009 boots 008 boots 002

Lately I have been thinking a lot about this little blog and I feel pretty bad for slacking so much on posts. Not that anyone out there is dying to know what the hell is going on in my life, or what I am wearing, no. I feel bad because this blog has always been a little creative outlet for me and by neglecting it, I feel like I have been also neglecting taking care of myself in a way. This blog will never be a real fashion blog by any means, It will never have the most creative photos, or content. But each post will contain something I like, something, even if it isn’t all that extraordinary, that I think is neat. I never really address politics, current events or anything of the like on this blog (and I know a lot of bloggers are criticized for that), because I feel that if someone were really looking for that kind of information, they could find a better version of it elsewhere. I could voice my personal opinions on those matters, but as I stated before, this is my creative outlet. I will/have gotten on my soapbox and ranted on some matters, but this blog is meant to express myself in all of the small, everyday happenings that I deal with and how I can get through them in matters that prevent me from ending up in prison for strangling my co-workers. If putting on (what I think is) a cute outfit makes getting through a long day a little easier, I will share that. If posting pictures of my friends and I, all gussied up makes me smile, it’s on here. Same goes with the movies, books, and food I feel are worth mentioning on here.

That being said, I feel a great need to simplify things in my life right now. When I first started this blog, I was dabbling a bit in every trend I saw to see what fit me best. I would end up at Forever 21 and the thrift store every payday, looking for something to wear on the blog. Almost three years later, I own a house, have student loans to pay off, and honestly love going out and doing things with friends & family so spending so much money on clothing is no longer an option. Buying a ton of clothes from thrift stores is a lot of fun too, but at the same time, I end up with TONS of stuff that needs to be altered and are never worn. My goal right now is to simplify everything, clothes, unnecessary items, I am even thinking of having a yard sale-not that I have the time… but I honestly think I have found my own sense of style, that I am comfortable with, and that fits my lifestyle. Instead of being a “what is Sara going to wear next” blog, this has become a “how many times can Sara remix her favorite dress/top/shorts” blog. And I am happy with that because it is more realistic, and less stressful. I am not saying that I will never experiment with a new trend again, because I will, but I want this blog to become my creative outlet, where I can have my “me time”, and not something stressful. Of course I say this as I am facing a busy-ass weekend; life just has too many awesome things to offer at once! BUT, I feel pretty good about this and I am hoping it will improve how often I am able to do posts.

Also, balls.

Oftentimes people will tend to get an idea about me or my personality and become comfortable with settling with the idea that that is me. I think what most people make the mistake of (myself included), is they forget the concept of “multiple interests”. I run a street style blog, I run, I like to cook, I love Shakespeare, I am a huge dork,  I go batshit crazy for Weezer, I am loud & crude, I can be a music snob, I live for books. I may take the time to style my hair and put on makeup before I go out, but that won’t stop me from making goofy faces and loud noises.

This past weekend I ran into an old friend from high school and his fiancé, and the first few times I had met this woman, she was a little cold towards me. After a 45 minute Doctor Who/Fringe/Xfiles discussion, she warmed up and we actually ended up having a great time.  The same goes for Kyle, people always think of him as "the nice guy" (which he honestly is, very nice), but those close to him know he can be very funny and snarky. He could also tell you the entire history of Michigan or Detroit if you get him started.

I guess what I am trying to say is, I really love that people have multiple interests and it might be hard seeing them at first. You might not have all the same interests as them, or any, but it is cool to unwrap the layers of one’s personality.

PS-Thanks to Mariah for joining me in these pics & taking the ones of me.

Hiddles!

Where do I even begin with this post? I have had an entire weekend to try to come up with a cohesive post, and yet I’ve got nothing.

If you have no clue who the gorgeous man in the picture is, he is none other than Tom Hiddleston himself. He is an amazing British actor, you probably recognize him from Thor, The Avengers, War Horse or Midnight in Paris. ANYWAY, he is in Detroit right now filming a vampire movie mere miles from where I work.

So I guess to start from the beginning, while I was away camping last weekend, Kyle’s awesome brother Chris posted an article on my facebook timeline, stating that Tom was filming in Detroit near Brush street (right where Kyle and I always park for Tigers games!), and I about lost it. I think everyone in that campground googled Tom Hiddleston, because I would not shut up about it. I could not figure out if they were filming the entire movie or just part of it. I also checked all of his tweets and about died when I saw how happy he was to be in Detroit “Motown”, because I LOVE Detroit, despite all of the negativity towards the city.

Moving along to the good stuff-Tiffany and her sister Whitney (my friends and fellow Hiddles fans), went downtown last Tuesday in an attempt to meet Tom, and they succeeded. I had to work that day, and went home after and was pretty bummed that I missed out on him so we made plans to go again.

At first, I was pretty nervous about waiting around outside the hotel stalking him because I really didn’t want to be an asshole. But after Tiffany and Whitney told me how nice and patient he was, I felt better about it. After about two hours or so of waiting in the hot 104 degree sun, we got the chance to meet him on Friday!

It took me a second to realize it was Tom in the long-sleeved flannel with a giant Whole Foods bag on account of his sunglasses and wet hair. A group of guys who were standing near us spotted him though and said “Tom!” and he looked over at us and smiled and there was no doubt who he was. Tiffany, Whitney and I gingerly walked up behind the guys and Tom said “Hey guys, I’ve got to run, do you have something for me to sign?” and signed what seemed like a million pictures for the guys and then Whitney handed over her Thor hammer and he got really excited about it and said “A hammer!”. He even asked her if she wanted him to write her name or just his. Then Tiffany and I asked if he would take a few pictures with us and he said “of course” or “sure” or something like that and took one with Whitney & myself. He then asked Tiffany if she wanted one too, so I took the camera from her to take the picture and after looked at mine and it was really bad, lol. Tom and Whitney looked awesome, so I very nervously asked if I could take another and he said yes. While Tiffany took the second one, Whitney asked if he would take a pic holding her hammer and I must have looked at her because Tom said something like “Where you looking at the camera or the hammer?” and he kind of laughed when he said it so I started laughing and he said “let’s take another”. He then took one with Whitney and her hammer, he pretended to hit her with it and we just started giggling. We then thanked him, one of the guys said “Enjoy Detroit” and he watched us walk off and then climbed in the van.

To be honest, I really wish everyone could be as nice as he was. Not only did he let me take multiple pictures, but he made sure that I took a good one. He put his arm around us, even in the 104 degree hot sun, and he never stopped smiling. I was shaking because I was so excited but at the same time did not want to keep him from getting to where he needed to go, but he was just so patient with us. And, guys, he smelled SO GOOD! We all figured he must have gotten out of the shower on account of the wet hairs. Either that or he has the best smelling sweat ever.

I have heard over and over again that you are never supposed to meet your heroes, but if every hero was as nice, kind, adorable, patient, and funny as Tom Hiddelston, things would be a little different. I am beyond thankful that I had the opportunity to meet him, and also very thankful that I didn’t creep him out.

BEST DAY EVER!!!

Dress Code

july 008
july 015
july 010
Whoa, TWO blog posts in a row? This day has never come! I have been really slacking on the blogging front lately, I do apologize, but life has been crazy.

A few weeks ago, they changed the dress code for the main office at my work. I work in the smaller office in the warehouse, so it is assumed that the same rules don’t exactly apply to us, since nobody important really ever sees any of us. The new dress code includes: No flip-flops, sneakers only on Fridays, no frayed clothing, no tank tops or low-cut tops, dresses and skirts-no shorter than four inches above the knee, no shorts, and jeans only on Friday. I guess this is pretty standard, but I find it hilarious that they day we found out about the dress-code, I wore shorts to work. I mean, I would argue that these are work-appropriate because of the tweed, but I am not sure if that would fly. That same day another co-worker walked in wearing jeans and sneakers (it was not Friday) and another wore flip-flops. I understand wearing respectable clothing in the work-place, I do. But I can’t help but feel like it is high school all over again. Are we going to get sent home for not wearing appropriate clothes? If we are going to have these rules, I fully support the idea of bringing “spirit week” to the office. You know, find a co-worker to dress alike and be a twin with for a day, have college sweatshirt day, pajama day, 80’s day, mismatch day, or best of all: Star Wars Day! I think it would be awesome. No? Okay fine. Back to work.

Little Bits: Camping in Metamora

Once the warm weather hits and stays, the itch to get away for a few days is soon to follow. Kyle, my brother Mark & his girlfriend Mariah & I, all decided to sneak off for a weekend of camping at Metamora campground in Michigan. Only a mile away from the city and it is like being in a different world. The trees are the same, but instead of smog there is a lake. Residents have piles of firewood and fruit for sale in their yards, on an honor system. Oh and street signs are not always a given, so smartphones are welcome.

Friday night we were restless and ended up staying awake until the wee hours of the morning, drinking and enjoying a campfire. Saturday morning, Mark was up before the crack of dawn renting us a boat to take out on the lake and there is where we pretty much stayed for the most of the day. Coming from a cozy, but stifling hot house in the city with no air, I welcomed the 10 degree difference in the temperature. I also had no problem jumping into a lake highly populated with fish and snails. I honestly would have loved to go on a run or a hike in the six-mile trails in the park, but I had no fellow runners in the group, so I may have to recruit Kyle for a jog up there in a few weeks.

Now that I have had a taste of vacation, I honestly cannot wait until the wedding is over so Kyle and I can go somewhere, or at least stay home and get to know sleep a little better. Life is just crazy lately, and I am inhaling heaps of coffee to keep up.

1) First night of camping-Starting it off right with some drinks. 2)Mariah & I trying our hand at rowing. 3)Some bromance. 4) These guys made stick-man outfits with black clothing and glowsticks, then proceeded to scare the crap out of the rest of the campground. 5) We made pizza & pbj hobo pies for our meals.
